8th Grade
Welcome to 8th Grade!

Hi! I am Rebecca Schreiber and I am the 8th grade homeroom teacher at Divine Providence School. At Divine Providence, our junior high switches between teachers. This year, I am teaching science, math and vocabulary. I have been teaching for a total of 5 years and this is my 3rd year here at Divine Providence. At previous schools, I was a computer teacher for Kindergarten through 8th grade and I taught junior high social studies, science and vocabulary.
I earned a Bachelor Degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, with a concentration in history. I also have earned a Masters of Teaching from Dominican University. In my sophomore year at UIC, I was a biology major hoping to become Physical Therapist. I started coaching high school volleyball and from that experience, I realized that my dream was not to become a physical therapist but to teach. However at that point, I was more than halfway through my undergraduate program, so I finished my Bachelor’s and immediately (the Monday after graduation) started and my course work for my Masters in Teaching.
I did not always love school. It was very difficult for me while I was in the primary grades. I struggled with phonics, oral reading and spelling. It was not until the 4th grade that my teacher also saw something was wrong as well. It turns out that I had a speech impediment that resulted from hearing issues when I was younger. It was that teacher that made me feel like I was not slow that I just was not hearing things the correct way. After a year working with her and a few years with a speech pathologist, these items were corrected and I truly began to love school. If it was not for my 4th grade teacher, I probably would not be teaching. It was her special attention and concern for me that made me love learning. I had the pleasure to work for her during the last year of her career.
I think that this year is truly going to be amazing. I am super excited. We are adapting an iPad program with the 5th and 6th graders. It is going to be an amazing educational tool that we will utilize in the classroom. I have been working all summer on a new science curriculum that will focus on earth, life and physical science in all of junior high. With the use of the Smart Board and Science Lab, it is going to be an exciting year, in which we embark on some exciting projects such as expanding our Garden Project.
I am so happy to be here at Divine Providence. It is a great school community. The parents and students here are amazing and I am always amazed to meet parents that are so supportive. I am looking forward to the new year and getting to know my new students and continuing on the educational journey of my returning students!.
