Hello! I am Karen Blase, the second grade teacher at Divine Providence School. I began my teaching career here in 1978. I started up the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs at Divine Providence. I have also taught 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math and reading classes. I have been in second grade for over 20 years now and I love it!
In second grade, the students learn about the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. I feel honored to be a part of the students' experience in their faith. Sharing the excitement of these milestones in the children's lives is such a privilege for me.
I received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Northern Illinois University. My goal to become a teacher started when I was in junior high here at Divine Providence School. (Class of '70) I had excellent teachers who inspired my desire to be in education. Those teachers were the ones who taught with positive mindsets, and instilled confidence in their students. They cared about their students as more than just their students. I connected with those teachers. My philosophy of teaching is modeled after those experiences.
Having been a teacher for more than 30 years here, I have seen education change so much! I am excited about those changes. The technology used today is amazing! I love the Smart Board in my room and I'm looking forward to using other kinds of technology. (Although I will confess to hanging on to some of my favorite filmstrips!)
The Superkids Program is favored by the teachers and students alike. It is the best language arts program I have ever used. Our students are learning more and enjoying it more! Superkids is a motivational, fun, and challenging program.
Throughout my years of teaching, styles have changed, but the connection I feel with my students, their families, and the staff I work with has never changed. I am happy to be a part of Divine Providence School!
